Where Angels Fly : In loving memory of Jesse Lefebvre (°02/06/2007 - *24/02/2015)

Commissioned by Banda de Musica Municipal de Silleda (ES), Kevin Houben has written this work for the Certamen de Valencia 2018 in Spain. Where Angels Fly is a very technical, powerful and virtuoso work, with a rather fragile and soft introduction in which the main motif – derived from Paul Gilson’s La Prière from Le Retour aux Pays – is developed and also includes Houben’s own musical signature ‘HBE(N)’. Out to Sea and The Shark Cage Fugue : from Jaws

Referring to the 1975 blockbuster Jaws, director Steven Spielberg states that John Williams' music “was clearly responsible for half the success of the movie.” This suite features two of the signature musicalsequences. In “Out to Sea,” the trio of shark hunters led by police chief Martin Brody (played by Roy Scheider) heads into open water to find the menacing beast. This is followed by the “Shark Cage Fugue,”a classically inspired and sophisticated accompaniment to a tense underwater scene in which Hooper (portrayed by Richard Dreyfuss) comes face-to-face with the great white in an all-too-fragile suspended cage.

Tom Sawyer Suite : Five Scenes from Mark Twain Op. 27

During his childhood The Adventures of Tom Sawyer was the favourite book of the composer Franco Cesarini. With his memories of the magic of joy, fear and freedom, Cesarini seeks to bring the figures of the book to life musically in his Tom Sawyer Suite. Each of the first four movements describes a figure from the story. Tom Sawyer is depicted in the first movement, where the characteristic “cake walk” rhythm is used. The second movement depicts Huckleberry Finn. The third movement is slower, more expressively melancholic and is dedicated to Becky Thatcher. Then there is Injun Joe, who tries to catch Tom in the fourth movement with the fifth movement leading to a happyend.

Some few months after returning to Naples from Rome, where he had gone to follow the premiere of L’Olimpiade at the Teatro Tordinona during the 1735 carnival season, Giovanni Battista Pergolesi –– notwithstanding the quickened pace of the disease that would soon bring his brief life to a close — presented the public with a new work, Il Flaminio, a “commedeja pe’ mmuseca” set to a libretto by Gennarantonio Federico. The opera was staged as the second of season that fall at the Teatro Nuovo sopra Toledo (one of three traditional venues, together with the Teatro dei Fiorentini and the Teatro della Pace, dedicated to the production of opere bu e), where it met with a generally favorable reception. The edition is based basically on the Pergolesi’s autograph full score, for the third act, (kept in Naple, Conservatorio di San Pietro a Majella Library) and on a complete manuscript full score copy today in the Abbazia di Montecassino Library. The critical edition is in two volumes and includes a historical Introduction, a detailed description of all the sources considered and a Commentary with critical notes and information related to specific problems of performance practice. There is also the facsimile reproduction of the printed libretto.

The Essence of Youth

In this work the composer portrays what he sees as the typical characteristics of youth, his young daughter being a source of inspiration. The music describes different emotions between parents and their child such as parental love, proudness andalso some tension.The final movement starts with a fugue based on the first theme leading to the work’s climax where the chorale appears in majestic form.

Tribute to a Maestro is an homage to Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683–1764), one of the most important French Baroque composers. Rameau was a hugely significant composer, organist, harpsichordist and music teacher: he also published several authoritative books on music theory. Jan de Haan based this tribute on a theme from ‘Les Sauvages’ (The Savages), the fourth act of Rameau’s ballet-opera, Les Indes Galantes (The Amorous Indies). The work begins with two variations, whereupon the striking theme can be heard. After a short intermezzo, four more variations follow, of which the last one is composed in Baroque style. Around the World in 80 Days

The novel Around the World in Eighty Days by the French author Jules Verne, was first published in 1873. In this story, the Englishman Phileas Fogg sets off for a journey around the world as a result of a bet with his friends at the LondonReform Club. He sets off that very night, together with his servant Passepartout, heading for Egypt, through France, and across Europe, then to Egypt and India, Hong Kong, China, Japan, and to New York where the bet appears to be lost. But they arelucky. On their arrival in London – as they have saved a day by crossing the date line – they succeed after all.

After Johann Adolf Hasse had ended his career as a composer for the opera stage and finally settled down in Venice, he wrote a number of sacred works. Since he had long been obligated to the Saxon Court, where he served as a composer for three decades until 1763, these works were originally intended for the Catholic Court Church in Dresden. The solemn-pathetic Missa in G minor [1783], with the inserted movement "Ad te levavi," is Hasse's final work: a crowning conclusion to an oeuvre whose significance in music history has only recently begun to be recognized and has now received the fitting acknowledgement it deserves.

An American in Paris

In this symphonic poem, George Gershwin portrays a day in the life of an American tourist in Paris. The music accompanies him along the Champs Elysées and through the Latin Quarter, where he becomes - in the form of a blues - overwhelmed by homesickness. A meeting with a fellow countryman brings back the upbeat mood, and our tourist enjoys the typical French atmosphere. A delightful trip to the French capital!
