Easily achieved, students freely improvise on a given set of pitches. As more and more instruments enter, the piece builds until it gives way to a rhythmically energized section beginning with percussion and an ostinato figure in the bass voices. Very easy! (2:10)

Roland Barrett: Ancient Visions

After a brief lyrical introduction, Roland Barrett begins a rhythmic ostinato that sets the stage for the heroic statements made by the brass. Open 5ths become very effective in the simple contrapuntal writing that adds to the overall energy. Brief solo trumpet is used in the lyrical middle section before a climax presented by full band. The final section brings back material from the opening with a key change that adds even more intensity to the exciting conclusion. An easy, yet effective contest or festival work.

Transport your audience back to medieval times in this spirited and bold new work for young band. The noble opening instantly conjures images of a world where magic and chivalry abound. As tempo picks up, the entire ensemble drives forward as layer upon layer is added. A beautiful lyrical section builds to a powerful impact before the piece moves to a final section beginning with a trumpet ostinato that alternates between 4/4 and 2/4. This massive work for orchestra and four choirs was commissioned by Mario di Bonaventura for the Hopkins Centre, Dartmouth College, Hanover, USA. It was first performed by the BBC singers and the Dutch Radio Orchestra, conducted by John Poole, as part of the Holland Festival 1974. This performance was recorded by the BBC an subsequently broadcast on radio and television.Ideally, Ultimos Ritos should be performed in a cathedral or large church with gallery space.

Bliss : Impressions of a Village

Bliss: Impressions of a Village is a spectacular test piece by one of the most renowned brass band composers in Holland, Jacob de Haan. It contains three impressions of a village in the beautiful Brabant province in the Netherlands. The first movement is in a very classical style, which captures the village’s history appropriately. The entire band joins in as the small river approaches an ancient castle. The third movement contains lots of interesting rhythms portraying the hustle and bustle of everyday life in the village.

Gilbert and Sullivan

Masters of the operetta, Gilbert and Sullivan left the musical world a legacy of marvelously playful and tuneful songs. This entertaining medley includes We Sail the Ocean Blue and (I'm Called) Little Buttercup from“HMS Pinafore,” Overture and Three Little Maids from “Mikado,” and Poor Wand'ring One, I Am the Very Model, and With Cat-Like Tread from “Pirates of Penzance.”

The Native American Omaha Tribe believed in an inseparable union between earth and sky. Commissioned for the Nebraska All-State 8th Grade Band, Michael Sweeneys Earth and Sky celebrates this ideal with a balance ofwoodwind motifs and delicatetextures (sky) contrasted with an underlying percussion ostinato and feature spots (earth). This impressive new composition by Richard Saucedo features a variety of musical styles in a contemporary sounding setting. The “Chorale” is written with lush scoring and emotional peaks and valleys. The driving“Presto” uses mixed meters and a combination of woodwind flourishes and fanfare-like brass figures. The “Chorale” theme is creatively woven into this section as well, and the ending section builds to anexceptionally strong and rhythmic conclusion.

Prelude and Revelation

MusicWorks – Grade 3John Moss displays his depth of musicality and impeccable orchestrational style in this uplifting work composed in two main parts. The opening Prelude uses brief solos and rich sonoritiesto create a sense of anticipation. Revelation is in a faster and determined style and interweaves the percussion section nicely with the full ensemble while developing the main themes. The Prelude then returns for acalm and reflective ending. (5:40)
